Quito
Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, is located in north-central Ecuador in the Guayllabamba river basin and near the active volcano Pichincha in the Andes mountains. The population is 2,197,698. A monument and museum have been erected in the general location of the Equator, known as la mitad del mundo (The middle of the world). One of the most popular things to do in the city is to take a ride on the gondolas that soar up the mountain range on cables, offering a beautiful view of the city. The ride lasts 10 minutes, taking you up to an altitude of 4050 meters.
Also, El Panecillo is a lush green hill overlooking the entire city. La virgen del Panecillo, a winged statue sits upon the hill looking out upon the city. Tour guides there will recite scriptures aloud as you look at the statue.
The Basilica de Voto National is another addition to the Quito skyline. Consecrated in 1988, the church stands on a steep hill to the north-east of the city. At night it is illuminated by bright green and blue lights. Visitors can climb the tower, to stop at many points looking out over the city. A telescope is available to look out at other landmarks of the city, including the virgin on the hill. Tall, stained glass windows arch across the lower parts of the building.
