Climate
Ecuador climate changes in different parts of the country, depending on the area's closeness to the equator. The coastal lowland temperatures are generally warm, with temperatures at about 77 degrees faherenheit. These areas are affected by ocean currents, and are hot and rainy between January and April. The temperature in Quito is generally cooler, with a temperature of 66 degrees in the day, and around 50 degrees at night. Ecuador has two seasons: wet and dry. Quito precipitation:
Galapagos Geography
In the last 200 years, around 50 volcano eruptions took place, some endangering the life of animals, some creating new land on the Galapagos. Many hot spots lie under the islands, creating new volcanoes and islands as other islands are dying. As the tectonic plates move over the hot spots, they create volcanic activity along the way. The Nazca plate, on which the islands lie, is pushing into the South American Plate. At this point of collision, the lighter South American Plate is riding up over the Nazca plate. This is called subduction. As the Nazca plate is forced into the mantle, it melts and the magma rises to form volcanoes. This is the result of the Andes and the same movement is changing the Galapagos islands.
